2020년 여름, COVID-19 위기 속에서 저(김은주, 밴더빌트 신학대학원)를 포함해 4명의 한인 설교학 교수인 김남중 박사(클레어몬트 신학대학원), 양성구 박사(조지폭스 대학교), 정승연 박사(포틀랜드 신학대학원)가 오리건 주 포틀랜드에서 함께 모였습니다. 대화 중에 저희는 설교와 영적 리더십을 새롭게 할 수 있는 기회를 제공함으로써 한인 목회자들과 한국계 미국인 목회자들 그리고 글로벌 한인교회들과 목회자들에게 기여할 수 있는 여러 의견과 생각을 나누었습니다.

우리는 교회가 교회 스스로의 정체성과 사명을 재고하도록 도전하는 매우 복잡한 세상에 살고 있습니다. 설교자들은 가짜 뉴스에 혼란스러워 하고, 소비주의, 물질주의, 개인주의, 배타주의의 영향 아래에 예수 그리스도의 복음을 분별하기 위해 고군분투합니다.

이런 상황에서 저희는 한인과 한국계 미국인 목회자들 그리고 글로벌 한인 목회자들이 함께 모여 생각하면서 무엇을, 어떻게 적절하고 효과적으로 설교해야 하는지를 배우며, 세상을 하나님의 통치로 바꾸는 것이 시급한 과제임을 믿습니다.

저희 네 명은 그 만남 이후로 양질의 프로그램과 행사를 제공하고자 '북미설교연구소'를 설립하고 부지런히 협력하여 일하고 있습니다. 저희 연구소는 현장의 목회자들에게 설교 사역의 이론과 실천에 관한 깊은 이해를 향상시켜 드리고 싶습니다. 또한 하나님, 이웃 그리고 자연과의 관계를 풍요롭게 하고 견고케 하는 데 도움을 드리고 싶습니다.

만약 여러분 중에 도전과 영감 그리고 용기를 북돋을 수 있는 글로벌 줌(Zoom) 특강, 온라인과 대면 모임의 유연성이 있는 하이브리드형 순회 강연 및 세미나의 기회를 찾고 계신다면 바로 그 곳이 '북미설교연구소'일 것입니다. 이 연구소를 통해에 참여자 여러분은 쉼과 배움, 그리고 교제를 지향하면서 정신, 영, 육체 전체가 학습에 통전적으로 참여하게 될 것입니다.

이 과정은 성령께서 여러분의 설교 소명을 성취하기 위해 여러분을 확장시키고, 변화시키기 위해 인도하는 방식 안에서 이루어질 것입니다.

Welcome to the North American Institute for Preaching and Worship (NAIPW)!

​

In the summer of 2020, amidst the COVID-19 crisis, myself (Eunjoo Kim, Vanderbilt Divinity School) along with Dr. Namjoong Kim (Claremont School of Theology), Dr. Sunggu Yang (George Fox University), and Dr. Rebecca S. Jeong (Portland Seminary) gathered in Portland, Oregon. During our discussions, we shared various perspectives and thoughts on how we could contribute to Korean and Korean American pastors, Korean diaspora pastors, and global Korean churches by providing opportunities to revitalize preaching and spiritual leadership.

We live in a complex world where churches are challenged to reassess their identity and mission. Preachers struggle to discern the gospel of Jesus Christ amidst the influences of fake news, consumerism, materialism, individualism, and exclusivism.

​

In such a context, we, four scholars, believe it is urgent for Korean and Korean American pastors, along with global Korean pastors, to come together to learn what and how to preach effectively, contributing to transforming the world under God's reign.

​

Since that meeting, the four of us have diligently worked together to establish the North American Institute for Preaching and Worship (NAIPW) with the aim of providing quality programs and events. Our institute seeks to enhance the understanding of theory and practice in preaching ministry for pastors in the field. Additionally, we aim to enrich and strengthen relationships with God, neighbors, and nature.

If you are seeking opportunities for global Zoom lectures, hybrid touring lectures, and seminars with the flexibility of online and in-person meetings that can inspire and challenge you, then NAIPW is the place for you. Through our institute, participants will engage in rest, learning, and fellowship, involving their whole being—heart, mind, spirit, and body—in the learning process.

This journey will unfold within the guidance of the Holy Spirit, expanding and transforming you to fulfill your preaching calling. At NAIPW, we are ready to walk alongside you, learn with you, and share our knowledge, wisdom, and skills in preaching with you.
